But I think we’re asking the incorrect question.
AI may not eliminate your job tomorrow. It may alter your career path even more.
That distinction counts. You work today. A career builds experience, responsibilities, and skills to achieve something better tomorrow. AI is changing how people get that experience.
Thus, enormous unemployment may not be the largest disruption.
The typical career ladder may disintegrate.
The First Career Rung Is Changing
Traditional corporate careers have worked for decades.
Young analysts, associates, trainees, and junior developers join companies. In their first several years, they prepare reports, analyse spreadsheets, study markets, write basic code, create presentations, respond to clients, and fix routine problems.
It may not be glamorous, but that labour is vital.
Young professionals:

- Make mistakes.
- Watch seasoned colleagues.
- Understand customers.
- Develop judgement.
You eventually take on more complex tasks and become a manager or specialist.
Careers are built that way.

Companies must make a new economic calculation if an AI system can do much of a junior employee’s repetitive tasks. Why hire ten junior analysts when a smaller team of AI-enabled experts can do the same workload?
Not everyone must be laid off immediately.
Companies may hire fewer low-level workers.
A much more uncomfortable question arises:
Where will tomorrow’s experienced professionals come from if fewer acquire the first job?

AI May Create a Professional Gap
This is where AI debates become fascinating.
Imagine a consulting firm that hired hundreds of graduates annually. These grads spend years researching, presenting, evaluating data, and supporting senior consultants before becoming managers.
Imagine AI drastically cutting junior-level work.
The organization may need skilled consultants. Consultants could be more productive than ever. But it may no longer need the same number of people to provide the groundwork for skilled experts.
Similar dynamics may occur across:
- Software development
- Financial analysis
- Marketing
- Law
- Accounting
- Customer assistance
- Consulting
- Research
- Administration
The effect may not be job loss.
The path from inexperience to experience shortens, narrows, or disappears.
That might create a peculiar labour market where experienced professionals are highly valued while young individuals struggle to gain experience.
The job wouldn’t have died from AI.
This would have killed the ladder.

India’s AI Issue Could Grow
This subject is crucial for India since its economic performance is tied to its large pool of youthful, educated, and technically skilled workers.
India’s IT services, BPO, consultancy, finance, and technology businesses have profited from a huge number of competent workers who can supply high-quality services at competitive prices for years.
That model presented huge opportunities.
However, AI challenges its core assumption that organisations need many people to conduct regular knowledge labour.
If one skilled worker with AI can do the work of dozens, the economy changes.
This doesn’t diminish India’s talent. Quite contrary. Highly skilled AI users may become increasingly valuable.
It means India’s demographic advantage can’t be based on population growth.
People who can accomplish more with technology may be the future advantage.
That idea is different.
AI-Proof Careers Are Unlikely
The reassuring perception that some occupations are AI-free must also be challenged.
Perhaps creative jobs are safe.
Maybe technological jobs will last.
Perhaps management will remain human.
Highly educated experts may always be needed.
Historical precedent advises caution with such assumptions.
Research from the International Labour Organization’s 2025 update on Generative AI and jobs shows that one in four workers globally are in occupations with some degree of GenAI exposure, while most jobs are expected to be transformed rather than made redundant.
AI is moving across fields. Information analysis, content creation, software development, picture interpretation, document summarisation, research, and complicated decision-making are its capabilities.
The ILO’s global analysis of Generative AI and jobs found that the technology is more likely to augment many occupations by automating individual tasks rather than replacing entire roles.
The smarter question is not:
“Which job can’t AI do?”
It is:
“Which skills become more valuable when AI does more routine work?”
This suggests abilities like:
- Ability to judge
- Lead and communicate
- Strategic thinking
- Customer comprehension
- Building relationships
- Creativity
- Problem-solving
- Accountability
People who direct technology rather than compete with it may rule the future.

AI Engineers May Not Win Big
There is also a belief that AI system builders will benefit most from the AI revolution.
They will be useful.
However, economic opportunity is greater.
Imagine a doctor who uses AI to better spot medical data patterns. Consider a lawyer who can quickly evaluate thousands of documents. A CFO could simulate hundreds of financial scenarios before investing. Before meeting a customer, a salesman could use AI to understand them.
None of these people must become AI engineers.
Deep industry expertise and technological leverage provide them an edge.
This combination could become a desirable skill in the current economy.
The winning employee may not know AI best.
It might be the individual who knows where AI can provide value to their industry and where human judgement still matters.

Companies Must Rethink Talent
The change won’t just affect workers.

People chose occupations thinking the world will be like their childhood.
Technology seldom transforms careers overnight.
It alters them slowly.
A task vanishes.
A junior job vanishes.
A department shrinks.
A new tool devalues an old skill.
The entire career structure changes eventually.
Thus, someone entering the workforce today may need to focus more on reinventing their value than choosing a career for 30 years.
Businesses must invest in reskilling. Educational institutions must promote adaptation, not only memorisation. It also demands professionals to stop thinking learning ends with a degree.
Because technology might change an industry in five years, a four-year degree cannot guarantee a 30-year career.

Combining may help people succeed:

The Verdict
Not everyone’s job will be taken by AI.
Workstyle changes are coming.
That distinction counts.
The biggest risk may not be losing your work one morning. In five years, you may learn that your entire professional path altered and you did not.
The stakes are huge for India. The nation can boost productivity and create new sectors with AI. But it must also prepare millions of workers for a job market where a degree, technical qualification, or years of experience may not be adequate.
Thus, professionals should cease asking:
“Will AI replace me?”
Much better question:
“What can I achieve with AI that’s impossible without it?”
Because the future of labour may not be AI-builders.
It will belong to those who use it wisely, challenge it when wrong, integrate it with human discretion, and accept responsibility for the results.
